How Long Does Microblading Last? Longevity, Fading and Touch-Ups
Microblading usually lasts 12 to 18 months. The fine hair strokes then fade gradually rather than disappearing all at once, and a refresh session brings them back before they lose their crispness. Skin type is the biggest factor: on oily skin the strokes soften and fade much sooner, which is why Beauty Art Pro in Geneva offers a dedicated touch-up for oily skin every 3 to 4 months. Below you will find what shortens or extends the result, how the first months unfold, and how often to plan maintenance.

How long microblading lasts, at a glance

StageWhenWhat happens
First sessionDay 0Strokes look dark and very sharp
Surface healingAbout 7 to 10 daysLight flaking; colour looks patchy or "ghosted"
Healed colour4 to 6 weeksThe true, softer shade appears
Touch-up4 to 6 weeks after the first sessionFills any strokes that healed lighter, fine-tunes shape and colour
Refresh, normal skinEvery 6 to 12 monthsKeeps the strokes crisp
Refresh, oily skinEvery 3 to 4 monthsCompensates for faster fading
Typical lifespan12 to 18 monthsStrokes fade gradually and blur if never refreshed
The touch-up at 4 to 6 weeks is part of the treatment, not an extra. Pigment never takes evenly everywhere the first time, and the healed result is only judged after it.

Why microblading fades

Microblading places pigment in the upper layers of the skin with a manual tool. Those layers renew constantly, so the body slowly breaks the pigment down and carries it away. That is what makes the result semi-permanent: it softens with time instead of staying for life like a traditional tattoo. A fading result is normal and expected, not a sign that something went wrong.

What makes microblading last longer or shorter

  • Skin type. Dry to normal skin holds fine strokes best. Oily skin, or skin with enlarged pores, tends to soften and spread the strokes, so the result fades faster and can look more powdery.
  • Sun exposure. UV light breaks pigment down. Brows that see a lot of sun, skiing or beach holidays fade sooner. A sunscreen or a hat once healed helps.
  • Skincare on the brow area. Retinol, acids, exfoliating scrubs and peels speed up skin renewal and lift pigment. Keep them away from the brows.
  • Aftercare during healing. Picking flakes, soaking the brows or sweating heavily in the first days pulls pigment out before it settles. See our microblading healing process guide for the day-by-day routine.
  • Your own metabolism. Some people simply break pigment down faster than others. Two clients with the same skin type can see different results.
  • Missing the touch-up. Without the 4 to 6 week session, lighter strokes stay light and the overall result looks older sooner.

How often to book a microblading touch-up

The salon's booking menu reflects these differences:
  • Touch-up at 4 to 6 weeks after the first session, for everyone.
  • Refresh every 6 to 12 months on normal skin, to keep the strokes sharp and the colour matched to your skin tone.
  • Quarterly touch-up every 3 to 4 months for oily skin, if you still prefer hair strokes.
Waiting until the brows have almost disappeared usually means more work at the next session, because the shape has to be rebuilt instead of refreshed.

Microblading longevity compared with other brow techniques

If you know your skin is oily or you want a longer-lasting result, a technique that adds shading may suit you better:
  • Combo brows (strokes at the front, shading through the tail) usually last 12 to 18 months and hold better on combination skin. Read the pros and cons of combo brows.
  • Ombré / powder brows are made entirely of soft shading and are often the most durable option on oily skin, with an annual touch-up at 12 to 18 months.
  • Microshading / Blade & Shade gives a very soft, diffused tint and is refreshed every 6 to 15 months.
Not sure which one fits? Compare them in combo brows vs microblading, or book a consultation and we will look at your skin and natural brows together.

How to make your microblading last

  1. Follow the aftercare exactly for the first 10 days: keep the brows clean and dry, do not pick the flakes, no makeup on the brows.
  2. Come to the 4 to 6 week touch-up, even if the brows look fine to you.
  3. Protect the brows from the sun once healed.
  4. Keep active skincare away from the brow area.
  5. Book your refresh on time: every 6 to 12 months on normal skin, every 3 to 4 months on oily skin.
