Combo Brows Pros and Cons: Is This Combination Brow Technique Right for You?

Combo brows (also called combination brows) combine microblading hair strokes at the front of the brow with soft powder shading through the body and tail. Their main advantages are a natural front, more depth than microblading alone, a result that usually lasts 12 to 18 months and that holds well on most skin types, including combination skin. The trade-offs are a longer session, a touch-up you should not skip, and a slightly bolder look while the colour heals. Here is an honest look at both sides so you can decide whether combo brows are right for you.
What are combo brows?
Combo brows use two techniques in one session. Fine strokes are drawn by hand where natural brow hairs are usually sparse and visible, at the front. Shading is then built up with a machine through the middle and the tail, where brows naturally look denser. The strokes give the brow a realistic texture; the shading gives it shape and definition, a bit like a brow filled in with powder. Learn more on our combo brows service page.
The pros of combo brows
- Natural front, defined tail. The front looks like real hairs, while the shading frames the eye. Many clients find it the most "finished" look of all semi-permanent brow techniques.
- Works on more skin types than microblading. Fine strokes alone tend to blur on oily skin. Because most of the brow is shaded, combo brows hold up better on combination and normal-to-oily skin.
- Longer-lasting result. According to the salon, combo brows usually last 12 to 18 months, depending on skin type, sun exposure, aftercare and your own metabolism.
- Fills real gaps. Shading adds density where hairs are missing, so combo brows suit sparse, over-plucked or uneven brows better than strokes alone.
- Less daily makeup. Most clients stop filling in their brows every morning.
- Adjustable intensity. Shading can be kept very soft for a natural look, or built up for clients who like a brow pencil look.
The cons of combo brows
- A longer appointment. A first combo brows session is planned for about 2 hours 30 minutes, consultation and mapping included, compared with about 2 hours for microblading.
- Bolder while healing. In the first days the colour looks noticeably darker and sharper than the final result. It softens over 4 to 6 weeks, but you need a little patience.
- A touch-up is part of the deal. A second session 4 to 6 weeks later fills any areas that healed lighter. The result is only judged after it.
- Maintenance. Like all semi-permanent makeup, combo brows fade. Plan an annual refresh between 12 and 18 months to keep the colour fresh.
- Higher price than microblading alone, because the session is longer and uses two techniques. See the current service prices.
- Not for everyone. Combo brows are not recommended if you are pregnant or breastfeeding, prone to keloid scarring, or allergic to pigments or numbing creams. Talk to your doctor first if you have a skin condition or take medication that affects healing.

Who should choose combo brows?
Combo brows are a good choice if:
- your brows are sparse at the front or have gaps you fill in every day;
- you have combination or normal-to-oily skin and worry that strokes alone will blur;
- you want a defined result that still looks natural up close;
- you prefer a longer-lasting result over the lightest possible look.
Microblading may suit you better if you have dry to normal skin, a good number of natural hairs and want the most delicate, hair-only effect. If your skin is very oily, ombré brows are often the most durable option.
Healing and aftercare in short
Surface healing takes around 7 to 10 days, when the brows look darker and slightly dry and may flake. The final colour settles within 4 to 6 weeks. During the first 10 days, keep the brows clean and dry, do not pick the flakes, wear no makeup on them and keep them out of the sun. Our combo brow aftercare guide covers the full routine.
